I had tried reading this book, the first of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, a while back but couldn't get into it. I kept hearing how good it was so I tried the audio version, which is more of a radio play than a simple narration, complete with a large cast of actors. The author himself is the narrator, and he is quite good. I'm really excited to listen to the next volume, The Subtle Knife, and I couldn't believe the story ended where it did.

Loved every second, and didn't want it to end, so I had to find a book store and buy the next two! Its a Harry Potter reading level and similar type fantasy story, but sometimes thats what you need on a long flight to NYC for the holidays!
I think as a child we all daydreamed about alternate worlds, so I love how thats the basis for the book. Thinking about all the permutations of how things could turn out differently is kinda fun :) I think if I had a Daemon I would hope she'd settle on being a ...more

I guess that happens when the main character is a young girl with only 11 years old, but is not so childish as that person seemed to say. And it isn't so phenomenal as other critics. But yes, is interesting.

The first portion of this book is simply one of the best slices of fantasy I've ever read -- interesting characters, richly detailed alternate world that's nevertheless introduced in a brisk and easily digested way, a well-paced narrative that quickly sucks you. Also, I came in expecting more or less pure fantasy, and was very impressed to experience an ambitious mix of alternate history, fantasy and science fiction -- a mix that easily have been become a mess, but which Pullman handles deftly.
