I had tried reading this book, the first of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, a while back but couldn't get into it. I kept hearing how good it was so I tried the audio version, which is more of a radio play than a simple narration, complete with a large cast of actors. The author himself is the narrator, and he is quite good. I'm really excited to listen to the next volume, The Subtle Knife, and I couldn't believe the story ended where it did. ...more

Loved every second, and didn't want it to end, so I had to find a book store and buy the next two! Its a Harry Potter reading level and similar type fantasy story, but sometimes thats what you need on a long flight to NYC for the holidays!

One of the critics I've heard, from someone which opinions I usually take, was that this book was very childish. I guess that happens when the main character is a young girl with only 11 years old, but is not so childish as that person seemed to say. And it isn't so phenomenal as other critics. But yes, is interesting.

I wouldn't compare, only having read this book, Philip Pullman to Tolkien. Both created new worlds, but Tolkien as also created a all new mythology, a all new world, new languages,

The first portion of this book is simply one of the best slices of fantasy I've ever read -- interesting characters, richly detailed alternate world that's nevertheless introduced in a brisk and easily digested way, a well-paced narrative that quickly sucks you. Also, I came in expecting more or less pure fantasy, and was very impressed to experience an ambitious mix of alternate history, fantasy and science fiction -- a mix that easily have been become a mess, but which Pullman handles deftly.
