On the surface this is the story of Shadow, a man who is brought into the war between Gods. The Gods are brought to America from people who came or were brought here from various places. Over time these Gods are sometimes cast off and they fight for the right to remain in the hearts and minds of man. There is a twist in American Gods. I knew there was a twist before I started reading the book. I KNEW it, knew it. I had read an interview with Neil Gaiman where he said, there is a twist in American Gods. I looked for the twist....I was completely surprised by the twist. However, since I read American Gods on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, it was very satisfying to be pleasantly surprised by the twist (the internet being what it is, and my crush on Neil Gaiman being what it is). Gaiman is a master of in-between places, cultivating uncertainty and the unseen.
I think that having a background in folklore really added to my enjoyment of the book, and that you must be in the right place to find pleasure in the pages. The gods in the novel are ancient ones, doing battle with modern gods (media, computers, etc) and there is much that takes place in a dream time state.
Save this book for when you have time for meandering and you will appreciate it all the more. Think of it as ...more
