On the surface this is the story of Shadow, a man who is brought into the war between Gods. The Gods are brought to America from people who came or were brought here from various places. Over time these Gods are sometimes cast off and they fight for the right to remain in the hearts and minds of man. Overall I enjoyed this book (once I got into it!), but I didn't love it. I found that it meandered until we got to Lakeside, but I imagine that's representative of Shadow's lack of focus.
I felt too detached from Shadow, even though that was somewhat just his character at least according to Neil Gaiman, to end up caring too much about what happened to him. The only times I got any sense of emotion from him was in his interactions with Laura.

There is a twist in American Gods. I knew there was a twist before I started reading the book. I KNEW it, knew it. I had read an interview with Neil Gaiman where he said, there is a twist in American Gods. I looked for the twist....I was completely surprised by the twist. However, since I read American Gods on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, it was very satisfying to be pleasantly surprised by the twist (the internet being what it is, and my crush on Neil Gaiman being what it is).
