This has held up really well. It’s well constructed, the rabbit characters are great, and it delivers so many great payoffs as Hazel grows in wisdom and authority. It does need better women, and the sequel Tales helps a bit with that, but it’s a great example of talking animals, a genre that lies between mainstream and fantasy literature.

It took me a bit to get into this book. I kept saying to myself, I'm read a book about rabbits. Rabbits! I couldn't get past some of the overly descriptive nature scenes. But I plowed along (and read two other books in the meantime) and finally finished it. I did finally get sucked in to the adventures of this crazy band of rabbits.
