I haven't stayed up past midnight to finish a book in a long time, but this one got me hooked. I'll save my full review for the podcast (sorry!) but I hope to read the next books in the series as well.

The Hum and the Shiver by Alex Bledso
I read this book a few months ago, I jumped right into another book when I finished and didn't write my thoughts down at the time. Thinking back, I've forgotten most of the book. I remember a few high points, but most of the characters and relationships were forgettable.

A fast, enjoyable read. The best aspect of this book was the unique setting. Bledsoe also does a nice job of slowly revealing the fantasy aspects of the book and Bronwyn is a fascinating heroine. There isn't a lot of substance to it, though. The plot is thin and the romance unbelievable. I would enjoy reading the sequels but they aren't going to the top of my reading list.

One of my favorite books of 2011. Not actually urban fantasy (contemporary fantasy would be a better name for this shelf, clearly) - the author notes that he thinks of it as "gravel road fantasy." Reminds me of earlier de Lint/Windling era contemporary fantasy, with a focus on music and art more than mystery solving. Set in the Appalachians, which I love. So many good things about this book. I can't wait for more.
