Is it possible to review The Fifth Season without using the words "groundbreaking?" I'm not sure. In any case, this is the best speculative fiction I've read in a long time. Some books have complex and specific characters, some have lovely writing, some have innovative and detailed world-building, some tackle difficult themes with intelligence. This book does it all.

I recommend pushing through the first 50 pages, even if it doesn't make much sense, and rereading those sections later on.
