Shelves: fantasy

N.K. Jemisin is a treasure. This book has so many layers I haven't even started to comprehend all of them. I'm already a third into the second book in the series so I'll do a full review when I've read all three. Fair warning though, I started reading this soon after giving birth to my daughter and had to put it down because something happens to a kid early on and it's devastating. The entire thing is devastating actually so, you know, be prepared. ...more

Maybe closer to 3.5 stars, but rounding up for being the first interestingly unique book I've read in a while. It took me a bit to get into the flow of the story, but once I hit my groove it smoothed out. There were a couple events in the story that made me cringe a bit, but they were more personal quibbles than flaws in the book. I love reading stories of societies that have forgotten their past and are rediscovering it. This one leaves me wondering if this is a future Earth or an alternate uni ...more
