As someone who adores reading fantasy novels as often as possible it’s always hard to find truly unique and standout stories, and A Darker Shade of Magic is one of those rare gems.

Schwab doesn’t stop at just giving us one vivid and detailed world, instead she gives us three. Grey London, Red London, and White London…a interesting multi-verse like arrangement linked by magic and doors only usable by those like Kell. A solid 3 star. I was intrigued by the idea of the multiple Londons, and I thought that bit was well done. Kell was fine, if not really a memorable character. Lila... Goodness, I have not been so annoyed by a character in some time. So many things that go wrong in the book were caused by her recklessness, and she learned zero lessons.

In the end I just didn't find it very compelling, and I had to force myself to read. I probably won't continue the series.

Man, I really wanted to like this book. It has all the elements that I'm usually game to read from cover to cover instantly-- a touch of magical realism, set in vaguely familiar proto-steampunky, parallel universes, evil guys, good guys, cynical guys. A plucky heroine from the bad side of town, with a heart of gold. Book was very slow but got better past thr 75% mark.
