This is my second time reading this book, with the intention of actually finishing the series this time, and it still holds up. I would probably give it more of a 4.5 if I could (come on Goodreads! Give us some halfsies!!) I love all the characters in the story, but I especially love Lila Bard. It is always entertaining when you have a strong female character, who of course has just a little something mysteriously special about her, but doesn't take crap from anyone and can definitely hold her o ...more

Plot was good, setting was strong, characters were well defined but didn't really catch my interest. That's probably a flaw in me rather than the book. ...more

This book was great fun, perhaps in largely because of the four-London setting. The world was creative and well thought-out and described. Schwab also has a tremendous knack for building tension. Good first book in the trilogy. The London world(s) were set up nicely even though the magic system was a little vaguely described. I liked the characters of Kell and Lila and look forward to additional adventures with them although this book could very easily be a stand alone book since the main story wrapped up nicely. The audiobook reader sounded like he could be from London so good job there.

There's Red London, White London, Grey London and Black London, each with varying degrees of magic. Kel, a resident of Red London, is one of the few who can travel between the worlds. Through some misadventures he accidentally unleashes a powerful force and teams up with a thief named Lila to stop it. I really enjoyed this. Fantastic world building, interesting characters, wonderful magic system. ...more

Dark, gritty, different. In other words, exactly how new age fantasy is supposed to be.
