What a fun read! Mind powers and magical horses! This was just the book I needed after reading The Eye of the World and feeling overwhelmed by the lore. Lackey wastes no time in setting up the world. This was my first Mercedes Lackey book but it wouldn't be my last!

I loved this series in middle school, but my tastes have changed since then. (I knew this going in, so I had low expectations.) This book is pure wish fulfillment fluff, without even good writing to make up for it (too much head-hopping without chapter or sometimes even paragraph breaks, for one). I'm still guiltily going to read the next two in the series and probably roll my eyes through both as well.
