The powerful opening to a modern classic fantasy series. This is Tolkein's moody hyper-violent and conniving older sibling.

I echo the sentiments of practically everyone who's read this series. Awesome.

So this was a great book, and it was hard to put down, but I don't know if I'll keep reading this series. I know that some people are cruel, and that often the bad guys win, but I just can't handle every character to whom I grow attached being dealt with harshly or ended terribly. I'm really curious about what happens to Arya, Bran, and even Tyrion, but what's the point if they are probably just all manipulated and then murdered in some horrifying manner? Ho. Lee. CRAP. After watching the first episode of the HBO show, I ran out and grabbed this book and my GAWD it's one of the best novels I've read EVER. WOW, using a words of another reviewer, this book is like the Sopranos meets Middle Earth. The story has some major shockers and it's really hard to put down! I'm looking forward to diving into the second book in the series.

Yay! Awesome, sprawling, epic straight up fantasy with tons of characters and lots of drama, civil war and honor. Can't wait to read the next one.

Pure escapism, even if it's an impossibly grim place.
