Re-reading this as the HBO series plays out. Jon Snow is much cooler in the books, the dire wolves are bigger, and lots more background that a TV series can't hope to include. Lots more background as well, as Martin turns standard fantasy tropes around. ...more

Amazing epic fantasy narrated beautifully by multiple characters as wars are fought, families grow and decline and dragons are born. A stunning, must-read.

Ho. Lee. CRAP. After watching the first episode of the HBO show, I ran out and grabbed this book and my GAWD it's one of the best novels I've read EVER. This sucker is a master's class in how to construct an entertaining adventure. Characters, pacing, plot, prose, all the little fiddly bits that come with fantasy stories (family trees, creatures, weapons, maps, mead and whatnot) -- it's all here and it's done perfectly. This baby goes right to the top of my all-time favorites along with Rushdie, ...more

My first try at reading this was 3 or 4 years ago and I couldn't get into it. Then I watched them first episode on HBO, I was hooked. I ran to my Book and downloaded it.

It has been an amazing journey reading it. You get so emotional about the characters that he has no problem killing off or crippling. I make sure I stay ahead of the show. It is a must read. Help I don't write many reviews but I read a lot of books but I felt the need to write this one.

Pretty intense and enjoyable. This is a book where you need the family trees next to you 75% of the time. It's also got plenty of plots interweaving and cascading against each other. Watching it all come together like a domino trick is fascinating. This is also the longest prologue I've ever read since it sets up a seven book story arc. Beware that the series is not done yet. ...more
