My favorite books transcend genre. This one was particularly compelling in that it mixes fantasy with an alt-world of cold, Lenin-era ambiance. The premise is that gods once actually walked the earth, but then man killed them all. The story of the book follows the consequences of this action. This is a great, meaty fantasy and I highly recommend it for the world building and fantastic characters, including a kick-ass female lead. One of my faves of 2016.

More than a year ago a friend (you know who you are) told me about a book he's reading, a fantasy novel featuring a female lead character who's in her thirties, didn't know how to fight, wore thick glasses; definitely not the young, mysterious, gorgeous, alluring assassins-wanna-be we often see in fantasy novels. It piqued my interest but somehow I got distracted by other novels. Until now.

A diplomatic investigation, which explores a murder and the clash between cultures and religions. Bennett has a talent for strong female characters, hell bent on changing their circumstances, only to find the underpinnings of their reality are not what they seem. Excellent world building. Recommended as a read-a-like to Brandon Sanderson.
