I was late to the party, but What. A. Party.
Looking back from 2024 or 2030, I think we'll point to City of Stairs as one of the novels that changed the course of how the literature of the fantastic (specifically in the epic fantasy mode) is thought about and the ways it is deployed.

I'm not really sure which way I want to go on my rating/review. On the one hand the story was nicely original, a world and magic unlike other books I've read, on the other, it was completely predictable. If some little hint was given, you could be 100% sure that it related to something coming up. And it was never subtle. I really don't like when I figure something out before the main character. It makes them seem dumb. And since the main character in this book is meant to be a highly intelligent

Good book, although I somehow had no trouble putting it down for astonishing amounts of time. Probably because I bought it so the library didn't nag.
