I started this book years ago, and didn't get very far in before I gave up on it. I thought it was just cheesy, grimdark cyberpunk. I'm glad I came back to it. Turns out it's a cracking noir detective story, wrapped up in the sleeve of cheesy, grimdark cyberpunk. It's dated in places and irritatingly preachy at times, but overall it's a great blend of noir & sci-fi. The audiobook was quite good, too.

This is good sci-fi at its best. Morgan takes one little twist on our reality and then just runs with it, exploring all of its potential impacts. In this book, Morgan's twist is the concept of transferable consciousness, which allows a person's mind to be uploaded to a new body after death via a 'cortical stack'.
