I don't normally read historical romance, but as I had had the opportunity to hear this author speak about his book at a libaray event near to where I live, thought I would give it a try.
Set in Ireland in the 18th century, it tells the story of two brothers - one's quest for everlasing love and the other's for all controlling power. I enjoyed Heart of Stone very much and although it was based on the author's ancestors, I loved the twist at the end which was in sharp contrast to the real events. I felt deeply sorry for Mary who was imprisoned in her home for many years and not permitted to see her children. In reality, it was for thirty years and it's unbelievable that a man could do that to his wife, although it was permitted by law. This was a brilliant read. The research that had gone into the book was amazing. For a first publication it was outstanding. I'm not commenting on the storyline, don't want to spoil it. Well deserving of the 5* reviews it's been receiving.

Thoroughly enjoyed Heart of Stone. The tone and setting fitted perfectly with the era, as did the characters - some I loved and some I didn't! A pacey story that was hard to put down. Neelie
