I loved reading this first book. It brought back all the feelings I had as first read through the Immortals series with Numair. I can see how He becomes the man he does.
There are so many subtle setups happening throughout this story. Each time I saw something that I knew was going to have relevance later, I couldn't stop squealing.

Despite this book having a few faults and inconsistencies, I loved it and I love Tamora Pierce so 5 stars! My rating system has never really made sense, so why start trying now?
I have been highly anticipating this book and it took me 2 whole weeks after I had a copy in my hands before I could bring myself to start it because what if it wasn't as good as I had hoped? What if it was and then I had to wait another year for the next one?

This book had numerous small nods to other books and characters in Tamora Pierce's Tortall universe.
The changes in the young protagonists and where they end up as adult characters we met earlier in the Wildmagic series can be explained as having changed over time into adults, and experiencing shaping situations that will no doubt further unfold in this Numair series.
I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of an Egypt-like land. I'm a big fan of Tamora Pierce from way back. But her latest books ...more
