The nice thing about historical fiction is that I almost always learn about something I did not know or understand. That is true of this book but the learning was hard, because the facts were horrendous. This is the story of 3 young women and Poland. The story is told in three voices. Caroline Ferriday, a 30 something rich socialite living in New York where she volunteers at the French embassy was an actual person and much of the book is based on her diaries and papers.
