Did you know that being called "an Uncle Tom" is a complement? While Beecher Stowe's Tom is a heroic inspiration, who lived through difficult times with purpose and faithfulness, today's society has degraded reference to him to mean someone who complies and only harms himself in the process. Yet this is not the experience of Uncle Tom in the book. The power of Tom's character is shown in the endurance of his name, even when people have tried to twist or slander it.

Wow.
This book really helped to personify the problems/people involved in slavery in America. The author creates characters that discuss the different viewpoints on slavery. She pokes holes in all the pro-slavery views. I'm amazed that our nation felt that slavery could be justified IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. I understand that slavery is not new, it's been around since before the Israelites were enslaved by Egypt. I just find it difficult to think we could allow this to happen in modern times.
