Great read. Beautifully written, multi-layered story. A book that makes you think about your own life, family, regrets and mistakes.

This was a really good story about a man who receives a goodbye letter from an old co-worker who is spending her remaining time in a hospice. He replies back and, on his way to mail the letter, he ends up walking farther and farther until he is on a 600 mile walk to see Queenie Hennessey in person. The book moves at a slow pace but it felt right for this story. Harold meets many quirky characters along the way. I especially enjoyed the introspection experienced by Harold and his wife. I nearly never read this because I thought it would be full of sentimental whimsy, but I was wrong and nearly missed a real gem. I was put off by the synopsis which said that Harold Fry set out to past a letter and instead walked 500+ miles. Although that is true, Rachel Joyce handles the fact that this is a bizarre thing to do very well, although it's not her focus. Sometimes after reading the first page of a book you realise that you want to read on! So it was with this. A charming story with a clever twist - if it doesn't make you cry you have a heart of stone.
