“You’re Next” is a very good thriller, set in modern day America, but with its roots in the past. It opens with the abandonment of 4 year old Michael by his father, following events that the child doesn’t understand. He is brought up in a foster home, where he befriends a boy named Shep. Although the two boys choose different paths as they grow up, their relationship, forged on “loyalty” and “stamina”, doesn’t end when they leave the foster home. It becomes an on-going thread in the novel.

I enjoyed You’re Next, the characterisations were good and the story very compelling. I really wanted to find out why Mike was abandoned in a playground at the age of four. It didn’t reach 5 stars since the beginning dragged a bit, the violence was too graphic and the police involvement unbelievable at times. BUT these are minor points!
