The subtitle really says it all. This is an unusually fascinating book which explores the ways in which human cadavers are used for scientific research – or not. Along the way Roach gives us some very interesting facts about disposition of human remains over the centuries, including efforts to preserve and understand the function of the human body, as well as horrifying medical treatments using various organs.

A fascinating, if somewhat disconcerting book. Even as you read you find yourself detaching from the subject matter which is a natural human reaction to death. But the author has a fabulous sense of humour and writes with sensitivity and intelligence, so overall this was a 4.5 star book for me.

I never thought that cadavers could be amusing, but Mary Roach finds a way to make them just that. I loved reading this book and I am aeriouly considering either donating my body to science or composting it (if that is available). I learned alot of things I probably never would have learned and enjoyed every minute of it!
