Marietta Greer's dream was to escape her small town in Kentucky and, with the recommendation of her teacher whose wife was a nurse, she landed a job in the local hospital. She saved enough money to buy a car and set off for an unknown destination. She decided that she also needed a new name to also go along with her new life, so her plan was to rename herself based on the place where she ran out of gas. Fortunately, that turned out to be Taylorville, so Marietta became Taylor.

This one was a relaxing read with quirky characters that just worked. The premise seemed a bit over-the-too here and there, but in the end that just ended up contributing to the novel's charm. Not a terribly poignant read, but still enjoyable. ...more

A young woman leaves home and moves out west. Her car breaks down. When she stops, a woman approaches her with a baby and leaves it with her. Eventually, the young woman and the baby make it to Arizona, where they befriend a recently single woman with a baby. The book chronicles the young woman’s growth and new friendships, as well as her decision whether to keep the child. It also includes a lot of Arizona’s wildlife and horticulture.

I wasn't sure I was going to like this book when I started it, but it grew on me as I kept reading. For starters, I liked the protagonist Taylor (Missy), and how she handled all the stuff that life threw her way; many of the other characters were interesting as well. But what really grew on me was that important things were being said -- not in a heavy-handed way at all, but in how Taylor and her friends (especially Mattie) lived their lives and in the choices they made: not as though it was a b ...more
