4.5 stars. This one started out a bit slow and loquacious for me but it picked up the pace toward the middle. It was beautifully written and the plot kept me guessing (incorrectly). I was definitely surprised to hear this was a debut - Setterfield is gifted with words in a way that makes one assume she is a veteran.

2015 rating: 3 stars. I basically remembered nothing of this book so re-reading it was like reading it for the first time. I liked it better I think but I still am not a huge fan.

Wow! I'm not sure I have ever read a Gothic tale...or if I have, this tale is unlike any book I have ever read. It has a ghost, twins Emmeline and Adeline, a decrepit house, madness, love, abandoned children, a governess, and more.

I knew very little about this book when I chose it for a group challenge, and I absolutely loved it! There are stories within stories, the characters are fascinating, and the twists and turns of the interwoven plots kept me continually engaged and surprised. It was shelved as a "mystery-thriller," but I don't think I'd call it that. I'd just call it excellent fiction. ...more

This is a well written book with many twists and turns. I thought it was a bit slow getting going but once I got to know all the characters it read swiftly. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more novels by Diane Setterfield. Read the story of Vita Winter as told by an unknown amateur biographer. It's a great fiction tale by a most talented writer. ...more
