The Thirteenth Tale, no matter how ingenuous the cover looks, is an odd book. A pragmatic story about the consequences of one’s precarious deeds manifesting in all its monstrosity, it is rather cold and ruthless.

I'm so glad that I finally got around to reading this much loved book. It kept me guessing throughout with exciting reveals, a rich atmosphere and characters that I grew to love.
My edition had some reading group notes at the end one of which asked when this book was set. It really made me think as the book is written in such a way that it could be placed anywhere within the 20th century and even the "modern" section could well be historical. This is a really interesting book with lots of twists and turns and confusingly similar parallel plot lines. I listened to the audio CD version read by Jill Tanner and Bianca Amato who both did a great job but because of the intricate story lines it would have been nice to have a hard copy to re-read some of the more confusing sections.
