The complaint of some reviews is how wordy this novel is; in my opinion, the vivid descriptions and initially inconsequential side stories are what made this such an intriguing read. Guterson develops deep character not just with individuals but also with the island community as a whole. Fatalistic worldviews of the islanders and the superstition of fisherman brought to mind aspects of Japanese culture highlighted in the story, and the emphasis on interconnected lives within the small town echoe ...more
