At once a courtroom drama, a love story, a war story and a coming-of-age story, Guterson’s debut novel is a marvelous work depicting one man’s struggle against his baser instincts.

This book is set around the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto for murder in the first degree of Carl Heine. Interspersed through the trial are flashbacks via the memories of witnesses and also, Ishmael Chambers, a journalist covering this trial. These flashbacks expand to 10 years prior the trial - to the time before the war.

A haunting story full of suspense and pathos. Great historical background regarding WWII and the Japanese internment camps. The characters were well drawn and the setting was exquisite. I also rented the movie which followed the book in both mood and plot and was beautifully filmed. It makes you realize that, despite our good intentions and the fact we are a country of immigrants, the people in the US can be very prejudiced and unfair to minority groups. This book is a good reminder.
