I read 1.5 chapters of this book. Although I liked the descriptions of African nature and daily life, I did not like the writing choice of how the Price family viewed and characterized the African people. Some of the characterizations were simply a function of the fact that the African people had the misfortune of being born into poverty on a third-world continent (improper clothes, etc.). Absolutely spellbinding and riveting! The multiple POVs added such richness and complexities to this story, each one having valid points and reasonings. Kingsolver did a brilliant job with her vivid descriptions and brought each character to life. I will most definitely be using excerpts from this book when I teach imperialism.

This one took me forever to read; I needed time for processing. However, it was worth the effort.

One of the best books of all time! An absolute 5-star rated, must read book!!!!
It has been a couple years since I've read this book but it stays with me, one of those books that really leaves an impression and I fully intend to read it again. I'm surprised there wasn't more hype surrounding this novel because it really was exceptional. Unfortunately I've read, or at least attempted to read, a couple other books by Barbara Kingsolver and just couldn't get into them but The Poisonwood Bible is one ...more
