I had no expectations when I picked up this book...knew nothing about it and had never read any of Kingsolver's other works. So, it was a pleasant surprise to read this saga of an American family in the Congo, colonial and post-colonial. The novel excellently presents itself in the separate voices of the mother and three daughters...all with separate personalities.
