I kept waiting to see why this book has such high reviews. I would have liked it better if they gave more details and history of the Congo. I did not like anyone in the family. The ants were like a horror story. It took me a long time to get through it. I just could not get into it.

It had a slow start, but as usual Kingsolver came through for me. I like her writing, I like that she seems kind to the failings of her characters. I didn't particularly care for the main sister she followed - Leah - Adah was more my type and Rachel had the more interesting voice. But then, Leah is the Africa Kingsolver wanted to follow - Congo and Zaire - and things that happened to or around her were interesting enough for me to tolerate her voice.
