I found this book a bit slow at the beginning, and couldn't believe it would be worth the 500+ pages it takes. But it just kept drawing me in more and more as I read it. Gradually the complicated internal story of one missionary family grows to include the story of an African nation struggling towards independence, with dubious "help" from the rest of the world.
