This was a hard book to rate. Certainly worth more than my initial three star rating I changed into four stars. The historical part was the part of novel I liked, the part in present - not that much.

The beginning was a little slow. I almost feel that the side stories of the daughters was a distraction. I would have liked it more if the book would have concentrated more on the mother-daughters relationship. The first part of the book was really slow (2**) but the second half of the book was interesting and redeemed the book for me.

It took me a while to start this book, but then I got invested in the story (and the story within the story). I had a book club edition which helped me to think about some of the specifics of the story, which was fun.
