This was an interesting twist to the typical dystopia book set on a spaceship bound for a new planet. Switches between Elder and Amy's POV. Page turner after Chapter 60, if you have the fortitude to hang in there until then.

I thought this was an entertaining read. I haven't read too many young adult books that are actually science fiction, that is actually set in space. The beginning section has convinced me that I do not want to sign up for cryogenic freezing anytime soon.

I liked getting the two different viewpoints. It gave me a sense of what I may have thought (more like Amy), someone who hadn't grown up on a ship and also those of one who didn't know anything else beyond the ship (Elder). The society ...more

So wish I could give this more stars. The basic plot is good - people are cryogenically frozen on Earth and loaded on a massive spaceship heading on a centuries-long journey to colonize a new planet "across the universe." One is a family - mother, father and teenage daughter. The daughter is accidentally unfrozen too soon and finds herself in a strange world aboard ship where most of the people seem to be mindless drones - and the ones who aren't are labeled crazy and kept in the "Ward" at the h So wish I could give this more stars. The basic plot is good - people are cryogenically frozen on Earth and loaded on a massive spaceship heading on a centuries-long journey to colonize a new planet "across the universe." One is a family - mother, father and teenage daughter. The daughter is accidentally unfrozen too soon and finds herself in a strange world aboard ship where most of the people seem to be mindless drones - and the ones who aren't are labeled crazy and kept in the "Ward" at the hospital. Then there are the leaders of the ship: Eldest, an absolute ruler whose mindless subjects don't notice he's a tyrant; Doc, the only doctor for all of the thousands of people on the ship and someone who believes anything can be fixed with the right amount of medicatin; and Elder, the teenage heir apparent to Eldest, who is just beginning to question what he sees going on around him. The unthawing of the beautiful Earth-girl Amy only makes him question it more. Meanwhile, someone is thawing the frozen human cargo, murdering them. Amy and Elder set out to discover who the murderer is and what's really going on aboard the spaceship, of course all while becoming increasingly attracted to each other. What makes the book only worth two stars is that it's way too simplistic. When you've read the wonderful plotting of the Hunger Games trilogy or Harry Potter and any of a number of other YA scifi/PNR books, it's clear to see this doesn't measure up. The first thing that annoyed me was the rather lame attempt at creating some hip new words - which is, as Elder might put it, really frexing annoying. It feels a bit like hearing your parents trying to sound cool. Very early in the book Elder discovers there's a whole bottom level of the ship he never knew about - it's been kept secret for generations - and the next thing we know, people are going back and forth to this place like it's a city park. And why are the "crazies" in the Ward allowed to wander all over the place? Doesn't that negate the purpose of keeping them all in the Ward? There's lots of other little things like that too. In short, there's not a lot of deep thought here. I'm sure some readers will really enjoy it, and it clearly is intended as the first book in a series - so we'll see where the author takes it from here. ...more
