“I didn't mean to send love letters, but that is what they became. On their way to you, my words turned into heartbeats on the page.”

What a wonderful book! Magical, charming, endearing, funny, heartwarming and absolutely amazing. Beatrix is the best heroine ever. And Christopher is perfect for her.
The book starts with their correspondance and I thought it would be dull - and I couldn't have been more wrong! Christopher is a charming rake before leaving for war. War changes people, and it change ...more

The last book in The Hathaways series and as good as the previous ones.
This is the story of the most unordinary of the Hathaways sisters - Beatrix. Her neighbour, Captain Christopher Phelan is fighting in the Crimean war. The letters from Beatrix, that she signs as her friend Penelope, give him hope and strength to survive. Phelan finally comes back, brutally changed by his experiences, determinated to find a woman he felt in love.

Actually 4.5stars
When her friend Prudence refuses to correspond with potential beau, Captain Christopher Phelan, youngest Hathaway, Beatrix, takes charge of the situation since he really needed advice on how to handle a stray dog anyway. It was refreshing for the series to go the route of writing as that was a trademark of the era, after all. The tale is definitely Cyrano, Christian and Roxanne with the sexes reversed.

A very sweet and refreshing romance, with a dark side. This is my first glimpse of the Hathaways and I'm hooked! They are the kind of family you want to be a part of, even (or especially) with all of their quirks.
Beatrix is so far one of my favorite female characters in the genre. Her independence, passion for animals, and unconventional hobbies made me like her more with each chapter. She was strong, yet sweet and compromising...something which seems to be lacking in a lot of characters lately ...more

Beatrix Hathaway rescues wounded animals and returns them to the wild or, if they can't be returned, cares for them as pets, to the loving indulgence of her family. However, this makes her a bit eccentric to marriage-minded gentlemen. When her friend, Prudence, receives a letter from her beau serving in the Crimean War, relating the despair of warfare and his recent acquisition of a deceased comrade's grieving dog, and intends not to respond because it was not a love letter, Beatrix asks to resp
