4 stars.
What an ending to the second book.
I loved this book, not as much as the first, but this was still an amazing installment. Laini Taylor writes so beautifully that I get sucked into the world she creates.
The story was a little slow going for the first 300 pages but then it starts to pick up and it's hard to put the book down.
While I don't blame Karou for feeling how she does about Akiva, it still hurts seeing them so far apart. DoBaS just tore at my heart and when I felt it starting to ...more

A great book 2 for the series. As with most second books its a bit more mellow of a read, but Taylor does a great job of developing characters (especially her super awesome secondary characters)and setting up for book 3. Which, by the way, I'm super excited to come out. I won't bother to write a synopsis since thousands of other people will do that for me...so I'll just list my cheers and jeers.
Cheers!

So impressed with the second book - I liked it even better than the first. Too often a second book in a trilogy reads more like a filler leading up to the third, but this stood strong in its own right. I enjoy Koura as a heroine. She doesn't mope. She doesn't collapse in a heap when her love story goes wrong (as so often happens in the second book - one stereotype this book does hold to). Instead she pulls herself together and builds a kick ass army. She doesn't need rescuing. She keeps a level

I had heard that this second in the series was not as good as the first, and I was prepared to suffer through it in order to get to the third one. I needn't have worried. While I consider it deserving of 4.5 stars rather than 5, it's still a riveting story, with complicated characters facing real dilemmas in a fascinating setting. Yes, there's a lot of killing, but we're witnessing a battle to the death for two opposing civilizations, so it seems to me a necessary part of the story rather than s

Good, but not as good as book 1. The story dragged on in places and I'm not a fan of the violent war scenes. Still love Karou, Akiva, zuzana, isa, so loved the parts where they were involved. Looking forward to book 3!
