I really tried for the last six months to read this book but I just couldn't get passed the third chapter. I know it has great reviews and I probably picked it up about 20 times and dropped it after reading a page or two. The world she created wasn't intriguing or pleasant enough for me. Maybe it's because I hate drugs, I never associated with ppl who were interested in them, I don't watch movies that are centered about them, and based on what I read in the first three chapters, it seemed they w ...more

I guess the third time was the charm necessary for me to get thru this book. My low rating is because through most of the book, I just didn’t care. There was much to draw me toward the story but not enough to put or keep me in its thrall.

The synopsis is accurate and doesn’t need to be rehashed. There was a strong flawed lead, a new world to discover, an unusual & intriguing premise, multiple books all as promised. I liked Chess’ flaws in a big way. I also liked Terrible. The rival stre

Yes, another urban fantasy/paranormal series - but I liked the twist on this one. The setting isn't quite as expected and the characters are engaging. This girl obviously has issues - and I'm not just talking about her drug use. Perhaps it's because I'm so far removed from being 20 that her knee-jerk romantic choices seem so pathetic.

Doyle is fine, a former one-night stand that she doesn't care to be involved with. Whatever *handwaves*. But she's hanging out with Lex over Terrible? I don't get

Wow! This is a dark, gritty, in your face book that I did not quite expect. In a future where religion has been put aside, Chess is a Debunker for the Church of Truth. Debunkers get paid by the Church to prove that ghosts are not involved in fake hauntings. Chess' life is a whirlwind of chaos. She is a drug addict and owes Bump, the local dealer a huge amount of money. In an effort to repay her debt, Chess becomes embroiled in a turf war both physically and spiritually.

This book was often diffic

I loved the world Kane has created!
This story was a fresh take on Urban Horror/Fantasy, with believable characters and a great plot.
I'm with a few of the other reviews I've read. I had a little trouble with the whole idea of the main character being a drug addict. At least the writers owned it. Chess has moments when she questions her addiction and her senses, but keeps popping the pills. In fact at one point the speed may have actually saved her.
I *am* having trouble picturing some parts of it
