Ilona Andrews ist wie die ältere, etwas unglamouröse Schwester von Sarah J. Maas. Es ist alles sehr ähnlich, aber einfach eine Nummer kleiner und etwas weniger bekannt. Und ihre Bücher sind tendenziell immer deutlich kürzer (250-350 Seiten) im Verhältnis zu SJMs massiven Wälzern (die ja mal locker 800 Seiten haben können).

It took me a while to get invested in the main characters. It was a hard book to get into and get past the first 40 or so pages but once I got through it, I couldn't put the book down. I found the same problem with the Kate Daniel series. I believe the authors had a hard time building and introducing us to the new world in a reasonable pace in a way not to overwhelm us or bore us, a problem they seem were able to fix in their new series, Hidden Legacy. I had to know what happens next after the first couple of pages and saw: "Look at Grandpa Cletus! He's been eating dog brains again, and now he's drunk!" (Who knew you could get drunk on dog brains?) That was the expand Rose & Declan's story or to introduce fresh characters.

I enjoy the 'Kate Daniels' series, so decided to try more by Ilona Andrews and this doesn't disappoint. It's perhaps a bit more romance-y and definitely trope-y but it was a quick read and entertaining.
