Kate has started her own business after leaving the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid. Business is slow (nonexistent) until the Master of the Dead, Ghastek, requires Kate's aid in stopping an out of control vampire. It seems that magic is failing everyone from the most powerful to the basic user. Andrea, Kate's best friend, becomes the first employee and joins Kate in her quest to stop a madman who could destroy every magical being in Atlanta.

Andrea, Kate's best friend, becomes the first employee and joins Kate in her quest to stop a madman who could destroy every magical being in Atlanta.

The tag team of Kate and Andrea provides enough snark to keep all but the most harden at bay. Andrea is royally ticked off at the Order for dismissing her after learning of her true self. Kate spends her life being ticked off at multiple parties.

Curran and Kate's relationship becomes more solid in this book. The Pack is learning to accept her as his Mate and their Alpha. Curran places his trust in Kate by having her preside over hearing petitions. Her reasoning and decisions are on point.

A visit with Evdokia reveals insight into Kate's early life. Witch magic is intertwined in her past and buried memories cause both joy and grief. The trip into the woods involves a shape shifting creature that made me smile. The Nightingale Bandit provided some of my favorite exchanges.
Who taught you to shoot, Louis Braille? That arrow missed me by a mile.

There was so much action in this book that it was difficult to put down. Julie runs away from school (again), Kate ends up with bodyguards, Curran is hunting down a rogue render and a misguided genius has discovered how to destroy everything we have come to love in this series.

I listened to this first and found it quite enjoyable to have someone read to me. But I find that I really like to read the printed word and savor it. My imagination seems to provide a better picture for me when I read.

I can't believe that I was not impressed with the first book in this series when I read it years ago. What was I thinking?!? Each book gets better and leaves me wanting more. I rarely give 5 star ratings. The book really has to grab my attention. There is no doubt that this is a true 5 star experience! Another winner in an exciting series with a kick-ass heroine. I'd rate this 4.5 stars, if I could. Kate has started her new business after the craziness that happened in the previous book, but things are quiet. Happily, she hooks up with Andrea again, and they work together when a seemingly easy case comes in. But, of course, things get complicated quickly, culminating in a hugely exciting and often gruesome climax at the end. Julie is a featured character #5 in the Kate Daniels paranormal series

But, of course, things get complicated quickly, culminating in a hugely exciting and often gruesome climax at the end. Julie is a featured character this time as well as she faces a huge dilemma which is being set up as an important factor in a future episode. As the series grows, there's a lot of character development that I love. I admire the fact that Kate and Curran are both so strong and alpha yet they're willing to work on their relationship, both trying to compromise and work together, despite some misgivings especially on Kate's part. They're so cute together and so, well, normal, even with their totally abnormal lives. For instance, when Curran is teasing Kate about her snoring, she retorts with "Well at least I don't turn into a lion in my sleep." And he grumbles, "It was only the one time." So perfectly them. It was great to revisit with previous characters like Derek, Jennifer, Daniel, Doolittle, and other shapeshifters. Plus we get to know a bit more about Kate's past when she visits the witches. There's an underlying message of racism and division that hits home in every time period. The story revolves around a group of humans that doesn't understand and consequently doesn't like magic, thereby assuming that everyone who uses magic must be bad. It's a sad commentary that there's so much of that sort of thinking in today's world, as evidenced by multiple news stories, and it's interesting to see it playing out in this world as well. Renee Raudman does a fantastic job of narration. Her voices are clearly distinguishable and they're easy to follow. She puts a little extra intonation into her narration, adding sighs and other little sounds that are hard to describe but which add dimension and normalcy to conversations. ...more

The fifth novel in the series is fast moving and full of story lines that keep the reader focused. I've been hooked on Kate Daniels since I read the first novel in this series. Kate doesn't know much about her past but in this novel she is about to discover some truths she may wish she didn't know.

In addition, it's fun to see her relationship with the Beast Lord, Curran, maturing as they become a duo tackling paranormal problems in Atlanta. These include rogue vampires, magic that is going wrong ...more
