I'm not sure I can continue to gush about how good this series is without repeating myself and becoming very boring. I haven't even finished reading the whole series and already I want to go back to the beginning to start all over again. In this, the 5th book, Kate is facing the destruction of everything magic. In a rare show of solidarity, every magical faction comes together to try and overcome the problem but, of course, it is Kate with her utter awesomeness who takes centre stage.

I know I say this every time but this series just gets better and better. Kate knows no bounds and does stuff that a normal person would shy away from. Of course she has Curran to back her up but still, magical shit can kill you.

Kate has finally quit the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid and opened her own shop but business is slow since Ted blackballed her to the magical folk. Then suddenly she is inundated, Ghastek, the Master of the Dead asks for her help with a vampire on the loose and an old ...more

Finally! A book that understands the usage and dangers of tourniquets and that they're an absolute last resort.

There's a scene when her ward Julie gets to the office and a young upstart challenges and puts moves on her that is laugh out loud funny. It is that women are equally powerful and dangerous if they are trained in how to use their own strengths that is one of the things I love most about this series.

How on Earth is "consort" better than "mate"?

Kate's shop is not thriving and Andrea joins her after the Order promotes her to Master of Arms and then retires her for mentally unfit for duty (being a were). Werewolf, Derek, and a young troublemaking bouda, Ascanio, are foisted on her as well. They must find a missing inventor and his missing invention.
