Smart, independent, self-sufficient, mysteriously magical, Kate Daniels’ is first shocked by then determined to find why her last living relative is dead. Kate’s poking, probing and investigating is both an Atlanta travelogue and introduction to this complex world where magic is commonplace, technology is more or less non-existent.

Dark, psychotic and gritty is Kate Daniels' world. I finished the book last night and I am half way through the second book and I still have no clue about so many important things in her world. What exactly is magic? How does it effects her world, etc
It seems the author tends to overload you with information and expects you to already know how her world works. Sorry , I am not a mind reader. I get my information based on what is written. I was ready to give up the book within the first 3 chapter ...more

More of a 3.5.
The story was interesting and the world building is great. The characters are incredibly tropey/iddy/whatever, but that doesn't bother me as much as it should. I think the setup for the next in the series was rather predictable, and that didn't bother me either.
With this book, you get exactly what you expect to get - a romp with the supernatural, a kickass and smart-mouthed chick, and sexy shapeshifting assholes. Not a bad thing, not necessarily knocking it out of the park though ...more

Review after re-read:
While I agree with the majority opinion that this book is probably the weakest of the series, I still stand by my original four star rating. Once you figure out how this world works, the book is very entertaining, especially once Curran enters the picture. It is just so much fun watching Kate and Curran interact. They have chemistry from the very first moment they meet, and it just continues getting better.

4 stars.
I liked this slightly more than when I originally read it. There was still the issue of info dumping but this is still a solid start to the series.
Really enjoyed seeing Curran and Kate at the very beginning. Looking forward to rereading the other books in the series...hopefully this year.
3.5 stars.
This was a fair start to the series.

This is a special edition of the first book in the Kate Daniels series. It includes Magic Bites (Kate Daniels Book 1); Kate Daniels FAQ; Character Information; Faction Information; Faction Quiz; Curran's POV (one previously posted, the other I think is new); and "A Questionable Client" Kate Daniels #0.5 AKA the short prequel to Magic Bites.
Rating Overall: 4 stars.
