This book was incredibly confusing to me. It's the first thing I've read by this author. The author makes up words but doesn't explain what the heck they mean (grosstopically, topolganger). Imaginative approach by a creative author! I liked the characters in the book very much - Inspector Tyador Borlu of the Extreme Crime Squad is dedicated to pursuing the murderer(s), working hard to locate whoever is responsible for the death of a young woman in his city. His partner is Corwi, a woman who is devoted to her partner. In the rival city of Ul Quoma he is paired with Dhatt, a policeman as dedicated as he, who uses different methods to obtain results. Together the two investigate the m ...more

If it weren't for the background setting of the two cities, this could have been a typical procedural crime novel: inexplicable crime, main protagonist, his colleagues at home and his collaborator abroad. And we don't get to know Inspector Borlú much as a person; in fact, we learn more about the lives and personalities of the victim and other potential victims and suspects. The cities, however, become vibrant personalities and actors in the drama.

I actually had a very hard time getting into the
