I've heard so many good things about this book and have had it recommended it to me a few times but never got around to it but I finally did and I'm glad I did. I've heard great things about this series but the first book was really just okay for me. I think because this is the first book and yet we jump into a bunch of already established relationships I felt like I was catching up through most of the book trying to figure out who was who and the relationships between Toby and several of the characters. I wanted to be more emotionally invested in Toby and I'm not sure why I wasn't but it just didn't happen for me. She has a lot of near death experience

At the beginning, I was not sure about this book but it is the first of a new series so I stuck with it; I find first of new series books often have bugs to work out. I think in this case, there was an added layer of difficulty/complexity because McGuire was creating a whole new world and set of beings in the process of also creating a new series. I am glad that I persisted. I ended up liking Toby more as the book moved along, and I did enjoy the story overall.

I like Toby's character and complicated life and want to learn more about her and her world. I think because everything about her has a backstory and there is so much that we don't know going in, it feels a little like you are playing catch-up. I hope this is just with the introduction and that doesn't carry forward in the series.
