What a way to start the new year! I love when I find a hidden (from me, at least) gem in my endlessly long TBR list, and this is one of those.

This novel has everything I tend to love most - wonderful characters, thought-provoking scenes with strong sense-of-place, a lot of metaphors and connections but in a messy way that allows for reflection and interpretation, magical realism. I particularly enjoyed the mirroring that happens throughout the novel. An experience of one character will mirror a

Murakami offers a fascinating read about a young man, Kafka, who leaves home at age 15 and an older man, Nakata, whose life is as simple as he is.  The story is strange at times but the author connects most incidents with what I believe are alternate universes to explain these unusual events.

We follow the stories of a 15 year old runaway boy and an old mentally disabled old man who whilst appeared not to have anything to do with each other are somehow linked. There are parts to the stories which are intriguing but most are just strange. This definitely would not be a book I’d recommend to my more conservative friends noting the sexual content & “Oedipean curse”. At the end, we are left to infer some conclusions & meanings for ourselves.

Japanese magical realism. I liked it.
Though I could have done without THE CAT ABUSE. I love cats. I hate abuse. It made me hate Johnny Walker and love Tagano more, though. As was purpose, I suppose.
It could have been shorter, too. A little too long. 300 pages would have been fine.

To say that I was blown away would be an understatement. There are really no words I could use to explain how amazing this book is. It is magical and philosophical and contemplative, an utterly stunning book.
