Garcia Marquez explores love's many permutations in this novel and at times, one wants to scream at the characters to "Snap out of it!" as Cher might say. Teenage Florentina Ariza falls in love with Fermina Daza from afar. They exchange furtive letters. Fermina's father discovers the "affair" and interferes. I was tempted to give this one star, but gave it two for the lush sense of place. I detested Florentino, he was a obsessive stalker who groomed a young girl in his charge. This is not romantic, this is not 'love'. ...more

I did not enjoy the style of writing the author used. It felt very much like he was trying to hard to be poetic, but failed.
