It's been a while since I read the first book in this series, but I do remember being a bit more attached to the characters in that read than I experience with this sequel. Flavia is still an adorable and precocious girl with insatiable curiosity, but something about the story just held me at arm's length.

The setup for the mystery was very clever and there was a decent plot woven around a series of clue discoveries. The characters did seem a bit caricatured and unpredictable, making t

This is my third read in the series. I quite liked the first and third novels but felt that this one was a bit lacking. However, I so enjoy Flavia de Luce as a character that I read to the last page. The story drags in the beginning and I missed some of the exciting aspects I found in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

Another murder, Rupert Porson, renowned puppet master, meets his end as the show begins. Since he is also a well known womanizer who is cruel and heartless there are many sus

There are times in this series when Flavia's passion for poisons, and for science in general, begins to seem a bit much, as she reports on her chemical musings much the same way another character would report on what she'd seen or heard. But for the most part, it's endearing, as is Flavia herself. An 11-year old in a house with a father obsessed with stamps and two older sisters with whom she has little in common, she finds what she can to amuse herself.

This particular mystery is one I didn't fi

Yes, Flavia de Luce is a precocious little sleuth but it took until halfway through the book before one of the characters keeled over and the pace picked up. I found the story slow going until then. If the first half of the book was as good as the second I would have given it four stars. I hadn't read anything by the author before and this was good enough for me to try another book in this series. I find it interesting that Encyclopedia Brown, that teenage detective of days gone by also used to ...more

Flavia is certainly a precocious kid, and seemingly wise beyond her years. Her fascination with chemistry is amusing even if the descriptions get a bit tired (like the author is giving the reader a mini-lecture on chemistry). I do find the cast of characters rather colorful and entertaining, but the mystery itself is rather dull.
