The third installment in this series starring a precocious 11-year-old chemistry wizard finds our heroine, Flavia de Luce, caught up with an old gypsy woman and her granddaughter.
I really enjoy this series, and this one is quite good. Bradley puts far less emphasis on Flavia’s chemistry wizardry, and relies more on her indomitable spirit, her curiosity, grace under pressure, quick thinking, and ability to lie through her teeth. Yes, her sisters contin ...more

I only picked this book up as it was a winner in the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards and I'm doing a challenge based on that list. I think I might have enjoyed this more when I was a teenager. The book begins with 11 year old Flavia accidentally burning down a fortune tellers tent. She invites the woman to stay on her families property and later that night finds the woman injured but not dead. Soon a dead body does appear on the Poseidon fountain on her families estate. Flavia of course helps with the investigation. I like Flavia and the inspector. Flavia's sisters are so obnoxious for no reason and they nearly ruin the books for me. I always hesitate before reading a book in the seri

2025: Flavia never disappoints in this revisit on audio.
2014: I'm loving the re-read of this series via audiobook. Just as much fun as reading my books.
Flavia is such a fun character and she gets herself into, and out of, the oddest situations. This time she's up against an obscure religious sect, Gypsies, antiques dealers, and the unflappable Inspector Hewitt. These are such fun stories! ...more
