This started out slowly for me but very soon into the story I was unable to put it down. By the end of the story, I was crying (bawling, really-it was embarrassing) because I felt so emotionally connected to Marion, Shiva, Ghosh and Hema. And that is the amazing aspect of this book. The 51 year old narrator tells the story of his life, both things that happened to him and others. Much of the story takes place at a hospital in Ethiopia where money is tight and miracles are sometimes given. Marion spends his life working hard for greatness. Verghese shows us characters for whom greatness is easy and others who throw away their chances for greatness because they are not willing to work hard. This was a good story, but slow pacing because so much is included.
