Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut
Even on my second time reading this book I still adored it. It's one of those books you can get completely lost in, in the story, the characters, the imagery. Laini Taylor has a way with words that is just magical and spoils you for any other books. This book is just exquisite. Thankfully this time round, unlike the first time I have books 2 and 3 ready to go so guess what I will be reading next. :-) ...more

This is one of the few books I've read that I liked the beginning more than the rest. It goes off like a skyrocket at the start: you've got your heroine, portals, conflict, drama and a guy with a very strange occupation. Then in the middle of the book in strolls a love interest and our protagonist gets all glassy-eyed and the pace slows down from overdrive to first gear. Then at the end we get a lot of backstory of a seemingly inconsequential character and the focus of the story doesn't return t ...more

I am really enjoying this author's writing style. Even though she is writing for Young Adults, she does not dumb down the plot or overly simplify any of the issues at hand. Yes, it does feature the dreaded 'insta-love' but not in such a way that you feel like gagging yourself with your own fingers, or in any way that detracts from the lyrical writing or mysterious plot.

It does at times read a bit like a diatribe against colonialism, which would make it an excellent book for high school English c

The beginning of this book was slow going for me, but once I was about a quarter of the way in I was hooked.

When I realized what the story was about I didn't think I was going to like it, I don't really care for angel and demon stories, but I was very surprised to find that I did enjoy it!

The characters are interesting and unique. The ideas in the story are so different from anything else I've ever read, which was so refreshing.

Just a heads up, there are a few swear words (view spoiler)

I really enjoyed the spin on the whole good vs. evil thing with this novel. It's kind of a twisted tooth fairy tale. The characters are really interesting and crazy imaginative. I was NOT a fan of the ending. Don't get me wrong, it's really written well, but I NEED to read the second one RIGHT NOW and I have other books on the list first. It's totally killing me to wait. ...more

The writing was great! The only thing that bothered me was (view spoiler).

Too Fairy Tale for me. I want gritty, despairing, heartbreaking, bloody, gory, reality...when it comes to the L word. Like Graceling, & Bitterblue(My Favorite when it comes to the love portion :) It just wasn't w

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is about an angel. It's about a demon. It's about chimaera. It's about teeth. It's about star-crossed love of the most tragic kind. It's about art. And travel. And memories. And family. It's about knowing who you are and who you used to be. And it is my (so far) favorite read of 2012 because it is so much more than I could ever hope to describe.

Laini Taylor was born to write. Some people can develop the talent. Some pe

I believe this series would appeal best to teenagers. The young blue haired, tattooed protagonist is a non-conformist, who loves her unconventional family. She switches between two realms, never guessing that there are even more worlds to which she must adjust.

I enjoyed the premise and had a difficult time in having to choose sides.
