Well, like most other people I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it was intriguing, complex, and very well written. With that in mind, I did listen to the audiobook, and I found the reader to be phenomenal. (on a side-note, I believe i have read her stuff before...and I would encourage anyone who listens to BCD's to check her out...) But I digress...

I am really enjoying this author's writing style. Even though she is writing for Young Adults, she does not dumb down the plot or overly simplify any of the issues at hand. Yes, it does feature the dreaded 'insta-love' but not in such a way that you feel like gagging yourself with your own fingers, or in any way that detracts from the lyrical writing or mysterious plot.

A girl named Karou who lives in her own apartment in Prague, goes to school and draws with such talent that others marvel at her drawings. Karou draws monsters that are real but to no one else but herself as well as people and places. Running an errand for the creature who sheltered her as she grew up, she encounters an angel named Akiva who tries to kill her. She must get through the portal to warn her friends.

The primary location in Prague is perfect for this story of a Karou, a mysterious young girl who seems to live in two worlds. And I loved that there are facts about her world(s) and about the history of Karou and other characters that are gradually revealed to the reader as the story progresses. I kept being surprised, right up until the very end. The characters are fascinating, and the situation in which they find themselves is unique, not like so many young-adult fantasy books being published
