The novel opens with Lizzie, a slave, coming to a summer holiday place with her master. Without her mistress. It tells of her and her friends as they struggle with their lives as slaves and specifically, female slaves. Female slaves bound to submit to all their masters' whims and caprices.

This book was primarily set around where I live and even mentions a stop along the rails that still exists today near Loveland, Ohio just north of Cincinnati. To know that the area in which I live was probably a main part of the underground railroad and where the resort where white masters took their slave mistresses both fascinates and disgusts me. I definitely want to do more reading/research of the 20 Mile House which is just down the road from me to see what else I can find out about that st

I'm still thinking about this one, and probably will be for some time. I can't say that I enjoyed reading this book because of the disturbing subject matter - frankly, parts of it turned my stomach. But would I recommend it to others? Yes, I would. Perkins-Valdez took a forgotten piece of history and turned it into a moving story with believable characters. This book made me want to learn more, and because of that, I'm giving it four stars.
